Full product details

The Shure SM58S is the standard live vocal microphone with one addition: a switch on the body. Everything else is the SM58, the same cardioid dynamic capsule, the same tailored vocal response and the same built in spherical pop filter, so it sounds identical. The switch is the whole reason to hire it.

What it is for

  • Auctions and fundraising, where the mic passes between tables
  • Roving microphones for audience questions
  • Lecterns and panel sessions with no operator on the desk
  • Ceremonies and outdoor speeches where a handler needs local control
  • Any room where a live open mic between speakers would cause feedback

How it is used

It is a wired handheld, so it takes a standard XLR to the stagebox and needs no power. The switch mutes at the microphone, which means a handler can kill it while walking between speakers rather than relying on someone finding the fader. Where an operator is on the desk throughout, the plain Shure SM58 is usually the better choice, because a switch someone has left off is the most common cause of a dead microphone.

What it pairs with

The Shure SM58 for the mics an engineer controls, the Shure Beta 58A where more gain before feedback is needed, and a desk from our console range. Our sound engineers run the speeches if you would rather not.

Delivery and support

Delivery, collection and technical support are part of every hire across London, the South East and the UK. Supplied with a stand, clip and cabling on request.

Hire questions

Shure SM58S (Switched) hire FAQs

What is the difference between the SM58 and the SM58S?+

The switch, and nothing else. Same capsule, same response, same sound. The S has an on and off switch on the body.

Should I hire the switched version?+

Hire it when nobody is on the desk, or when the mic is carried between speakers. Where an engineer runs the show, the plain SM58 avoids the classic problem of a mic switched off by mistake.

Does it need power?+

No. It is a dynamic microphone on a standard XLR, so it works on any console input with no phantom power.
