The Brief

A marquee gives production nothing for free

A 500 guest private celebration in a marquee on the grounds at Pennyhill Park, Bagshot, planned by Silver Fox Events, for whom Kudos is a preferred supplier, with Mahood Marquees supplying the structure and Food Link UK the catering. We produced everything the guests saw and heard: the dancefloor and the bar, the lighting inside and out, and the sound for a live band and a DJ.

There is no architecture to light in a marquee, no hard ceiling to bounce sound off and no wall that will hold low end, so the room is only what is brought into it. That is the whole job, and it is why we like them. Every decision about how the night looks and sounds is a production decision, and there is nothing in the way.

The Floor and the Bar

Both printed as mirror, one of them raised

We printed the dancefloor as a mirror in a chequerboard and built a raised bar in the same finish. In a room with a fabric ceiling the floor is the one surface that will return light, and a mirror floor returns all of it: the moving lights, the colour changes and the florals suspended above all land a second time. The room reads as though it carries twice the rig.

The bar was raised so that it read from the far end of a room that is otherwise flat, and lit blue from within so it held its own against the purple around it. Both came out of our print department, which is where a floor can carry a chequerboard, a monogram or a plain mirror to order.

Lighting

Two looks inside, and the grounds lit outside

Inside, the lighting design ran to two looks: a purple that lit the draping for dinner and a blue that pulled the room toward the floor, with moving lights and beams over the dancefloor for the party and a deep red for its last hour. The florals hung over the floor took whatever colour the room was in.

Outside, the walk from the house to the marquee was lit as part of the event rather than as a route. Uplighters at the base of the trees along the path in red and orange, ground-level fixtures marking the way, a hedge picked out in green and blue, and a clearing with seating in it lit for guests stepping out. From the marquee door the house sat behind all of it, lit.

Sound

A live band and a DJ on one system

The sound was designed for a live mehfil band first and a DJ second, on one system. The PA was tuned for voices and percussion, and the DJ played through it after the band rather than on a separate rig, so the handover was a change of performer and not a change of level.

In a marquee for 500 that is the difference between a handover the room notices and one it does not. We would rather run every marquee that way than give the band and the DJ separate rigs and hope they match.

Marquees in Surrey

Luxury marquee production at Pennyhill Park

Pennyhill Park's grounds are the reason to hold a marquee event there, and the production has to be worth the setting: a floor and a bar built for the room, lighting that treats the trees as walls, and sound that a live band can trust.

If you are planning a marquee event in Surrey, this is the scale we bring to it: 500 guests, a printed mirror floor and bar, the marquee lit inside and the grounds lit outside, and the band and the DJ on one system.
