Technical Design
CAD Technician (Live Events)
Draw the shows before they are built: stage plans, rigging plots and the drawing sets the crew works to.
- Location
- Uxbridge, with venue surveys across London and the UK
- Contract
- Full time
- Salary
- £32,000 to £42,000 a year
- Department
- Technical Design
Our drawings are the difference between a build that goes up cleanly and a build that finds its problems at midnight in an empty ballroom.
You will work from briefs and site surveys to produce plans, sections and elevations for conferences, awards ceremonies, exhibitions and private events, in venues from museums to five star hotels.
This is the role for a CAD technician who already draws well and wants to learn live events properly. If you know AutoCAD but not Vectorworks, that is fine: we will train you on Spotlight and Braceworks. What we cannot teach quickly is care over a drawing.
What you will do
- Produce stage plans, rigging plots, scenic details and drawing sets for events and exhibition builds.
- Work up 2D drawings from briefs, survey notes and the production team sketches.
- Join venue surveys and turn what you measure into accurate drawings, including access routes and rigging positions.
- Keep drawings current as briefs change, and keep the drawing library, symbols and templates in order.
- Support the Technical Designer on larger builds and on documentation for venue sign off.
What we are looking for
- Solid 2D CAD drafting in Vectorworks, AutoCAD or similar, and a clean, readable drawing set to show for it.
- A working understanding of scale, dimensioning and how a drawing is actually read on site.
- Enough spatial sense to think about sightlines, access and what will physically fit in a room.
- Organised with revisions and file naming, because the drawing on site has to be the current one.
- Willing to get on site and see what you have drawn get built.
Useful but not essential
- Any Vectorworks experience, especially Spotlight.
- 3D modelling or rendering, in any package.
- Experience drafting for live events, exhibitions, theatre or stage builds.
- Any rigging, LOLER or working at height awareness.
- Full UK driving licence for venue surveys.
