The story

A project worth looking at properly.

A 550 guest wedding reception in a glass marquee on private parkland in Warwickshire: 35 metres by 20, a black iron frame with glass to the ridge, supplied by The English Marquee Company. Sanjay Foods planned the day, catered it from a tent joined to the end of the structure and ran the bar. Amie Bone Flowers dressed it as an English garden. Kudos AV built everything inside the glass: the dancefloor and the DJ booth, the LED wall, the lighting and the chandeliers, the sound, and the stages they all sat on.

Glass changes every production decision. There is no ceiling to hide a rig in and no wall that absorbs anything, so the room hands every beam and every bass note straight back. We treated the frame as the truss, rigged from the ironwork on chain hoists, kept the glass itself clear, and planned the looks around the one thing a glass room gives you for nothing: the sky. The photographs at seven o'clock are lit by sunset, not by us.

Eight tonnes of kit, 8,081 kilograms on the picking list, went in on the Tuesday for a Saturday show, on two trucks, with our own crew on the build, the show and the strike.

Absen PL 3.9mm panels in a central wall behind the booth, Novastar MX30 processing and Barco S3 4K switching, with LED-edged drape panels either side.

04

Lighting Design

134 fixtures on the marquee frame: Chauvet R3 beams and Rogue Outcast beam washes, Robe LED washes, Prolights profiles, GLP X4 Bar 10s, Astera uplighters and pinspots, on an Avolites Tiger Touch II.

05

Chandelier Rigging

Four crystal chandeliers and the floral chandelier flown from the ironwork on Tractel chain hoists.

Wireless Microphones

A quad Shure ULXD system with four SM58 handhelds for the speeches.

08

Drinks Reception Sound

A pair of RCF Evox 8 column systems on the deck outside, played from an iPad.

Build, Show and Strike

Two trucks and eight tonnes of kit in on the Tuesday for a Saturday show, our own crew throughout.

The Floor, the Booth and the Screen

A mirror floor, a mirror booth and 35 panels of LED

The dancefloor was printed to a mirror finish with a trailing foliage pattern and the couple's monogram in a ring at its centre, and the DJ booth was printed to match, so the stage read as one surface from the decks to the front row of tables. Both came out of our print department. In a glass room a mirror floor earns its cost twice: the chandeliers, the florals and the sky all land on it a second time.

Behind the booth stood a central LED wall of 35 Absen PL 3.9mm panels, half a metre by a metre each, driven by two Novastar MX30 processors with a Barco S3 4K switching the sources, the signal carried the length of the structure from the control position on Lightware HDMI over TPS and Kramer HDMI fibre. Either side of the wall, white drape panels edged in LED battens framed it, so the screen sat in a lit proscenium rather than floating in glass. The content moved with the night: an illustrated English garden for the arrivals, the floral monogram through dinner, an alpine valley at sunset, and the monogram alone, in white, pink or red, for the party.

Lighting

134 fixtures on a frame that was never built to hold them

Everything hung from the marquee's own ironwork. Four crystal chandeliers down the centre line, with the floral chandelier from Amie Bone between them over the dancefloor, all flown on Tractel chain hoists and 2 tonne roundslings. Around them the rig: 22 Chauvet R3 beams and 24 Rogue Outcast 1 beam washes for the party, 12 Robe 600 and 6 Robe 300 LED washes for the room, 8 Prolights Eclipse FC profiles picking out the cake and the sweetheart table, 18 GLP Impression X4 Bar 10s along the drape panels and the frame, 32 Astera AX5 wireless uplighters at the base of the glass, and 12 Chauvet EZ Bar pinspots over the buffet. Two Look Unique 2.1 hazers gave the beams something to land on. An Avolites Tiger Touch II ran it over a Luminex fibre network, because a control position at one end of 35 metres of glass is a long way from the rig at the other.

The lighting looks were the shape of the evening: gold through dinner with the chandeliers warm and the frame dark, blue as the light outside went, then magenta, white and blue for the party, and a deep red for the last hour, the chandeliers glowing red and the mirror floor sending all of it back up.

Sound

Flown d&b for two DJs, a drummer and the speeches

The sound was a d&b system flown from the frame: six Y12 on Y Series flying frames as the main hangs, eight E3 as fills across the width of the room and four Y8 for the tables furthest from the stage, all on a Yamaha QL1 with a Rio1608-D2 stagebox. A quad Shure ULXD receiver with four SM58 handhelds covered the speeches, the drum kit was close-mic'd into the same desk as the decks, and the DJs had an Alto monitor stack of their own in the booth.

One system for everything is the point. The drummer's kit sat inside the DJs' mix rather than fighting it, and the speeches went through the same rig at a level set that afternoon rather than found on the night. Outside, a pair of RCF Evox 8 column systems on the deck covered the drinks reception, played from an iPad.

Glass Marquees

A glasshouse, anywhere

This was not a venue's own room. A glass marquee is a temporary structure on open ground, so everything a ballroom gives you for free, rigging points, power, a ceiling to hide the rig in, has to be brought in and hung from the frame itself. That is what this page is about: the scale a marquee can carry when the production is designed around the structure rather than fitted into it.

If you are planning a glass marquee wedding, in Warwickshire or anywhere in the country, this is the scale we bring to it.
