The brief demanded more than standard seasonal decoration. The installation required a fully considered scenic design approach — bespoke props and set dressing, large format print across every surface, atmospheric lighting designed for each distinct environment, and LCD screen installations creating the illusion of external winter views from inside the hotel rooms.

Creating an immersive installation inside a working hotel presents a set of production constraints that standard event builds do not face. Room dimensions are fixed. Natural light cannot be controlled. The installation must be completely self-contained — every element has to work within the existing architecture while creating the convincing illusion of a completely different world.
Kudos AV approached the grotto as a total design challenge — not room-by-room but as a single spatial experience. The scenic design established a visual language that carried through every room via consistent print identity, prop selection and set dressing. Lighting was designed room-by-room to create distinct atmospheric zones while maintaining a coherent overall festive tone. LCD window installations replaced the hotel windows with bespoke winter exterior views.

The Hilton London Metropole Santa's Grotto was designed to create a total break from the hotel environment. From the moment a guest stepped through the entrance, every visual cue — every surface, every prop, every view through a window — told a different story. The hotel ceased to exist. A festive world took its place.
The atmospheric lighting design was central to achieving this effect. Rather than uniform room lighting, each space within the grotto had its own carefully considered lighting state — creating warmth, depth and visual interest that the print and scenic elements alone could not provide. The LCD window installations completed the effect: where hotel windows would have broken the illusion, bespoke winter exterior content created the sense of a fully external environment.
Custom flooring and bespoke props ensured that no surface within the installation carried any trace of the underlying hotel room. The result was a genuinely immersive world — one that Principal Global Events and their client could present as a premium festive experience with complete confidence.
